Easter 2021

On Maundy Thursday we remember Jeus washing the disciples feet at the Last Supper and the spiritual battle in the Garden of Gethsemane. Then on Good Friday we follow the events leading up to the crowd calling for his death. We take time to think about the crucifixion and burial before the momentous events of Easter Day and the reality of the Resurrection.

Lent 2021

Thought for the week - 24/3/21:-
Crowds can be very fickle and easily led. On Palm Sunday the crowd cheered and shouted for Jesus. By the end of the week they were baying for his death. They had a choice, continue to recognise and follow Him or turn against Him. Jesus chose to go on his way to Jerusalem even though he was well aware of how it would be in the days ahead. May we too choose the right way as we move forward into Holy Week.

Thought for the week - 17/3/21:-
“You can’t do it that way, we always do it this way” We remember an old missionary friend commenting what people maybe said to the 4 friends who, finding the crowd blocking the doorway, went up onto the roof and broke a way in to bring their friend to Jesus. (See Luke 5 v 17-26). As we reach the end of a year of lock-downs and restrictions new ways of ‘being church’ have emerged, often over the internet. We have actually benefited from new ways of reaching people and bringing them to Jesus. We trust that for many, whose first experience of ‘church’ has been the internet, a closer walk in ‘the Way’ with fellow Christians will follow. This week’s Bible study looks at a blind man who found Jesus and a new way of life too.

for Lent 2021

Thought for the week - 10/3/21:-
Walking past Alphington Church recently we took a photo of the cross shining out from the church tower. A sign of our faith and an encouragement in these difficult times.
Faith underlies our hope in our walk though life with Jesus as our friend and companion. After the resurrection Jesus ‘walked with’ two of his followers on the road to Emmaus (Luke Ch 24 v. 13-35). He walks with us too in our journey through life with all its problems and its joys. As we continue our walk through Lent and Covid may we know Jesus’ presence with us and may our faith in Him be strengthened.

Thought for the week - 3/3/21:-
‘Peace’; not ‘quiet’ which is external but true peace which is internal. In these troubled times we need that inner peace. One of the blessings in church starts ‘The peace of God which passes all understanding...’ . Jesus said “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you….Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (John 14 v.27). May we all find that peace and leave fear behind as we move forward with our lives.

Thought for the week - 24/2/21:-
Hope, in worldly terms, is uncertain at present and soon fades. Our hope is in God, through His Son Jesus - a certain hope in His unfailing love and help in tough times. 'Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow' is a line in the hymn 'Great is thy faithfulness' by Thomas Chisholm. We all need that strength and hope from our faithful God, now and for the future.

Thought for Ash Wednesday:-
Traditionally in Lent people are asked to 'give up' something. In this time of difficulty perhaps we could instead give thanks for what we have and give something to others. A weekly gift to the food bank for those in need would be one suggestion. If you are receiving a food box then give thanks for help offered. We pray for better times again for all.
